Abstract: With the dramatic developments in information and communication technology, our society has gone through tremendous changes in terms of how we store, manage and access information and knowledge. These developments have brought substantive benefits for our society, but they have also led to new challenges such as difficultly obtaining precise information and the risk of information overload. We will focus on managing information and knowledge properly and securing our access to information. In this year, we will also focus on digital humanities as an example of field with effective use of digital information. Digital humanities is defined as research field at the intersection of digital technologies and humanities. We look forward to having interesting research.

ESKM-SS 2: Multiple Media Processing for Intelligent Information Systems

Abstract: Most of the information systems handle multiple information medias as their inputs and outputs. Using multiple information medias should enhance system’s usability, efficiency, and validity. In order to develop more intelligent information systems, multiple information medias should be used.
In this special session, researchers share and discuss the ways and the combinations of information media used in their systems. Which combinations of information medias are used in their information systems? Which combinations make their information systems more intelligent? Which benefits are generated by the combinations? Those questions are rarely discussed in academic papers. However, such questions must be discussed deeply. The researchers are expected to discuss them in this session.

Abstract: With the rapid development of data collecting techniques, large volumes of various data have been stored. The aim of this special session is to present recent results in the field of machine learning and data mining in order to develop new methods for discovering knowledge from such various data, including transaction data, numerical data, text data, tree or graph structured data, biometric data, and sensing data. Papers dealing with theories, algorithms, methods, techniques and systems in machine learning and data mining are sought for this session. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Knowledge Discovery, Text Mining, Tree Mining, Graph Mining, Classification, Intelligent Information Systems, Learning Theory, Rough Sets, Granular Computing, Evolutionary Computation.

Abstract: The rapid increase of Internet and sensor technologies has attracted and become a central role of driving force of information society, with providing a lot of useful services. Agent technologies would collaborate closely with such services and be a power source for yielding new intelligent services. This special session is intended to bring together researchers, students and industry people in the following area, but not limited to, social intelligence, agent technologies, applications of mobile sensor technologies, and give an opportunity for sharing and collaborating with each other on the topics touched on in this area.

ESKM-SS 5: Sustainable Smart Mobility Platform

Abstract: Research on smart mobility has started to change its focus on new domains, not only on transport systems. Although approaches from information science have been applied, most approaches conduct R&D on individual techniques such as sensing, acquisition and visualization of automobile probe data, etc. There is a lack of systematic/foundational research on design, development, and construction of an information infrastructure platform for smart mobility. The current smart mobility society has evidenced new progress about emergence/utilization of novel sensing techniques or services focusing on ITS, and further development can be anticipated. This special session is intended to bring together researchers, students and industry people in the following area, but not limited to, platforms, development methodologies, sensing, communications, and applications for smart mobility, and give an opportunity for sharing and collaborating with each other on the topics touched on in this area.
ESKM-SS 6: Knowledge Discovery from E-Commerce Data
Special Session Organizer: Makoto Okada (Osaka Prefecture Univ., Japan)
Abstract: The prevalence of the Internet has been promoting more of e-commerce, and many research have been conducted on e-commerce transaction data, customer reviews towards knowledge discovery. It has led to new techniques on recommendation, auction, product development and improvement, and more in many related fields. However, although large corporations have already gaining more benefits from those data as Big Data, most companies have still been suffering from many issues in treating those data, and the information that those data cannot have in principle, the reason why customers do not buy a product. Thus more research is waited. In this special session “Knowledge Discovery from E-Commerce Data”, a variety of research on this theme are cordially invited, from theoretical inquiry to practical tactic solutions, and it provides both theoreticians and practitioners with a wider view on e-commerce and knowledge discovery.
ESKM-SS 7: Medical Mining

Abstract: Recently, the importance of medical data utilization is increasing, and a vast quantity of medical data has accumulated due to the digitalization of medical treatment along with the spread of hospital information systems. The secondary use of medical data is expected to improve the quality and the efficiency of medical care, and promote the resolution of medical social problem. Medical data have many kinds including clinical procedure data, laboratory, prescription, unstructured data such as images and text. The medical analysis is not only the medical practitioners but also the novel methods such as machine learning, data mining, text mining and visualization by engineers.
In this session, we aim to discuss the analysis, the method and the construction system for various medical data and for any medical problems.
